An international project that sees Alex reunited with Treebox. A large, Classic Contemporary family home that is currently being built on the outskirts of Moscow, Russia. The clients had a detailed brief with requests including 2 outdoor areas for entertaining, childrens play area, formal pool and spa all in a contemporary style with Classic English and Italian influences. The space has been split into a series of garden rooms each with its own function and feel. The front will be a formal entrance with parterres made of hardy Taxus media ‘Tauntonii’ and standard lollipop Acers. There is an impressive Cabana to the side of the house with integrated outdoor kitchen and BBQ, Spa and lounge area. Around the back is a second area for entertaining with a paved terrace from the back doors overlooking an ornamental long pool. A modern take on a rose garden lies to the right of this with contemporary archways and parterres that take inspiration from the architecture of the house. The children have a large sweep of lawn with trampoline, tree house and mounds with tunnels to play in whilst the mother has her own summerhouse to enjoy. A secret garden is sited to the left of the house with sculptures dotted amongst wild looking woodland species and views are obscured with wall panels.
The planting for the garden was obviously an interesting challenge, needing to survive the harsh zone 4 climate of the region but a surprising amount of flowering perennials such as Rudbeckia, Achillea, Astilbe and border Phlox (which is very popular in Russia) flourish there. This teamed with the layout led to each area having its own colour theme. For example, calming blue and white around the pool and a hot perennial border with red, plum and yellow around the lawn area near the front. The client also has a real fondness for Peonys so these are included in abundance in the rose garden and around the property.
Alex has led the design of the gardens around the property and works look set to start in spring 2014 once the house has been completed.
